Margaret (“Aunt Maggie”) Massiah entered into eternal rest on August 15, 2018 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the age of 92.

Margaret is survived by numerous nieces and nephews as well as by many grand nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her daughter, Elizabeth Massiah, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Margaret was born on November 18, 1926 in Guyana, South America. After immigrating to the United States, Margaret devoted many years working as an administrative secretary at the University of Pennsylvania Law School where she earned the respect and admiration of her peers.

All of her nieces and nephews knew and understood that Aunt Maggie possessed a lifelong passion for education.  She urged each of them to continue their education well beyond their formal schooling. Aunt Maggie lived by example.   She continued to read and learn well into her retirement. She had a tremendous collection of books and was known to offer one to a niece or nephew if she thought it was going to be a good and helpful read for them.  Aunt Maggie believed that you are never too old to learn something new and that if you are educated you are empowered.

Aunt Maggie was a woman ahead of her time.  From an early age, she lived her life as an independent and assertive woman.  She did not wait for something to happen.  She found her way in life through hard work and determination.  She encouraged everyone to “find a way to make a way.” That approach to life earned the respect and admiration of all who knew her.

Though Aunt Maggie had one daughter of her own, she was a parent and mentor to her many nieces and nephews throughout their lives.  She was willing to listen to them.  She actively mentored them in their goals and ambitions.  She freely advised them when they were perhaps headed down the wrong path.

She shared her special kind of humor with them. She will be remembered fondly as a woman who was thoughtful and prudent, while also remaining gentle and kindhearted.  The wisdom of Aunt Maggie will be missed dearly by those in her life.  No substitution exists for Aunt Maggie.

A funeral for Margaret Massiah is scheduled for 10 AM on August 18, 2018 at Oliver H. Bar Funeral Home in Upper Darby Pennsylvania.
